Or Nauseate an entire group of enemies with Stinking Cloud. They also can't give everyone Firebrand or Stoneskin, or cast Legendary Proportions on themselves. What I would ask is, why AT over a martial like a Kineticist, Slayer, or even Magus? A competently built martial will out-damage an AT the vast majority of the time, and they can do it all day.Īside from a Magus, none of those classes can haste the party. This is why, in tabletop, there's no question - it's not a wizard's job to do damage, so being "arguably better than wizard at doing damage" is not a great selling point. Spells simply aren't as good at dealing damage as martials are, so it's better to leave damage to martial characters and have spellcasters focus on support and control, which pure wizards are much better at. What I would ask is, why AT over a martial like a Kineticist, Slayer, or even Magus? A competently built martial will out-damage an AT the vast majority of the time, and they can do it all day. The balance is more even in this game than tabletop, where the higher spell level wins every time (due to both better spells in tabletop, more non-combat problems to solve, and ranged sneak attacks being much harder to land), but that's the theory for Wizard over AT. This means that you can Stinking Cloud when they can't, Sirocco when they can't, etc etc. And the benefits of Scroll Savant are arguably greater than taking Arcane Trickster to be honest - because a Scroll Savant is a gil toss class so long as you have enough gold, and let's be frank, there's a ton of gold and scrolls in this game, you have infinite spell slots, thanks to the scroll vendor that got added.Ĭonsider that, at any point in the game except before level 3 and after level 17, the Wizard can cast a higher spell level than the Arcane Trickster a full 50% of all playtime. However, a Scroll Savant should never take Arcane Trickster, because they will lose out on their absolutely critical "Replace Scroll CL with your own" ability unless they take no more than 8 levels of Arcane Trickster. However, DC casters probably shouldn't because they don't really gain anything from it either. Vanilla wizards certainly do lose less from entering Arcane Trickster. Illusionists get level rounds/day of Greater Invisibility, usable as a swift action. ![]() Conjuration Wizards get level/day Dimension Door, and extra duration on their summons. They also get an aura of -2 saving throws to all enemies, though you also have to be a divination wizard, and there isn't even a divination spell at every level. Divination wizards, for example, at 20th will always win every initiative check forever (with a +10 to initiative, and all initiative checks are nat 20s). You also miss out on three feats (since your build would be Wiz 9 / Rog 1 / AT 10), and lose your school abilities, which, depending on spell school and build, can be very strong or very weak. Please don't break those either.Ī caster level is rather significant.
